Sorry to hear you can't make TIFF this year. I feel I've experienced it a little thanks to your wonderful description (and I've seen one of the films).
If there's a better rule than self indulgence then I haven't heard it yet and what's a little whinging and grumbling among friends.
Keep planning, I'm sure you'll make it soon. I'm reminded of a couple of lines from Tom Waits "The obsession's with the chasing and not the aprehending, the pursuit you see and never the arrest".
The film sounds great but comming from a stubbornly mono-lingual country I'm afraid I'll be denied it delights.
Hope your feeling better soon, thanks for the great show (and the stellar tech support by The Other).
